The purchase of this unit is imperative for the CVR in our challenge of sequencing positive COVID-19 samples and the downstream analysis associated with each sequence. The number of samples that we will be receiving over the coming weeks will increase dramatically, therefore we urgently require the system to help in our task of undertaking full genome sequencing of the SARS-COV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19. Genomic sequencing, bioinformatic analysis and the identification of potential therapies relay entirely on the timely delivery of the GridION, which provides the swift processing and capability we require. Rapid sequencing of viral genomes from patient samples in collaboration with public health colleagues informs our understanding of the transmission and spread of this virus and contributes to the generation of critical research tools which are shared with the wider research community.
