Expert review of GMC decision-making assurance work

The decisions we make can have a major impact on the public and our registrants. Given the high-stakes nature of our work - stakeholders rightly seek assurance that we exercise our powers fairly

We are commissioning an external, expert review of our past approach to auditing fairness in our decision making to identify and apply any learnings from this - to design and implement our forward-looking rolling programme of external audits. Part of the learning we are seeking is to understand the reservations of stakeholders who have raised concerns - so that we might mitigate these in how we design and commission audits in the future.

We also want to draw on any best practice in how we design, tender or target our audits from other relevant fields such as fairness in criminal justice or other processes involving high-stakes decisions about individuals. We would expect those undertaking the review to bring that expertise in best practice to the review.
