The UK has an obligation under international law to protect heritage assets when providing military intervention in the event of war or recovery following natural disaster. Military personnel require support in identifying heritage sites and an Historic Environment Record (HER) is an effective tool for planning purposes. For that reason, it is essential that the HER is available remotely and accessible by military personnel.
The current Historic Environment Record will be migrated into a GIS database that will be open source, free and accessible for all.
