This new Prehabilitation pilot clinical service aims to optimise patients prior to elective cancer major surgery.
The service comprises supervised exercise, dietetic optimisation and psychological support.
In order to deliver a "dose" of intervention, patient groups with a 6 week period in the existing patient pathway have been chosen. These groups are the patients preparing for surgery to the oesophagus, stomach, bladder, rectum, liver (secondary cancers) and gynaecological organs. Patients may participate in the service either during or after chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
The objective of the service is to successfully deliver 1 hour supervised exercise sessions, using a mix of aerobic and resistance exercises, three times a week for 6 weeks. It is anticipated that based on clinical need there may be some flexibility in the time available for each individual patient.
