The existing X-ray system is a custom design from Scandiflash and offers a unique tool as a pulsed X-ray source that can provide high intensity and very short (35ns) pulses of X-rays. This replicates the operation of large science facilities like synchrotrons and free electron lasers that are STFC's primary customers. Having these addition channels will allow STFC to probe the effects of repeated pulses and ensure the detectors we design, develop and deliver to the large science facilities will work correctly.
