Earth in Common, rooted in Leith, Scotland, originated as a community initiative under the name Leith Community Crops in Pots, reclaiming Common Good land to enhance access to healthy food and nature while building community and addressing systemic issues like food insecurity, climate change and social inequality. Central to its ongoing mission is the ‘Urban Croft’ model, transforming derelict urban spaces into community hubs for sustainable food production, education and skill-building. It runs multiple projects on the pioneering Leith Community Croft (e.g. nature- and wellbeing-related workshops and outdoor adventure play), offers accessible food-growing opportunities and promotes and campaigns on food-system issues, food sovereignty and responsible global citizenship. Facilities such as the Populus Café and Farm Shop, along with various events, further engage the community in its activities. It hires out space/facilities and will soon relaunch regular farmers’ markets.
