The Smith Art Gallery and Museum exists to inform, educate and inspire diverse audiences to access and learn about the history of Stirlingshire and its people. The Smith has played a special part in the history of Stirling since its foundation in 1874. Established by the bequest of artist Thomas Stuart Smith (1815-1869) on land supplied by the Burgh of Stirling, it is an historic public-private partnership which has continued to the present day. It was founded as a gallery of mainly contemporary art, with a museum and library reading room ‘for the benefit of the inhabitants of Stirling, Dunblane and Kinbuck’. Today, it functions as a gallery, museum, and cultural centre for the Stirling area. It is the repository for the historical artefacts and paintings of Stirlingshire. The museum offers exhibition opportunities for contemporary artists, a school’s programme, public events, a café, and a biodiversity garden that is accessible to the public.
